Social scientist. Professor. Entrepreneur. humanitarian. 


Dr. Rasheda L. Weaver is the first Assistant Professor hired for the new Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Iona College where she engages Iona students in research, coursework, and international service-learning projects that trains them to utilize entrepreneurship to advance community development.  As a social scientist, she conducted the first large-scale empirical study on the social, economic, and legal activities of social enterprises in the United States and is the Creator of Weaver's Social Enterprise Directory, a public directory for social enterprises in the nation.

In 2017, Dr. Weaver was voted Chair of the Social Entrepreneurship/ Enterprise Section of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA). She is also a member of the EMES International Research Network’s Ecosystems Workgroup, which focuses on mapping social enterprise ecosystems in different countries. Dr. Weaver has also served on the Board of Trustees for the Center for Environmental Transformation in Camden, New Jersey, through which she helped launch a youth-run social enterprise named South Camden Farms.

Dr. Weaver received a PhD in Public Affairs-Community Development and a Master of Science in Public Affairs from Rutgers University. She graduated valedictorian from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development with a Master of Arts in Applied Psychology. Dr. Weaver also graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Herbert H. Lehman College. Since 2009, she has received over 30 research grants, fellowships, awards, and honors.

As a born and raised New Yorker of Jamaican and Cuban descent, Dr. Weaver loves to dance salsa, travel, and cooks spicy Caribbean food for her husband and two children.
